Whether you are an individual or a brand, your social media presence is an integral part of your marketing strategy. From awareness to customer support, social media plays a vital role in every stage of the user journey.

If you are new to social media and are just starting with a brand new page, the initial stage can be a little disheartening if you have not set your expectations right.

After helping numerous startups establish their social media presence, I have learned a few things that will surely be of interest to all the brand owners and social media marketers out there.

5 things to keep in mind if you are just starting social media marketing.

Don't look for instant gratification:

If you have just started sharing your content on social media, there is a 1/100th chance of your posts going viral as soon as you post. Don't let low engagement get the best of you. Keep up the good work, and people will take notice.

Try to find patterns:

Some content pieces will work, while some won't. Notice what your audience likes and do more of it. Every social platform has its own algorithm that distributes the content. Create content with different formats and hooks to understand what works best.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do:

Picture this, you are at a carnival enjoying with your family, ready for the circus show to begin, and the person sitting beside you won't stop talking about how cool his brand new T-shirt range is and how it is made of 100% cotton, blah, blah, blah! Would you listen to this guy? No, right! But if the same guy was wearing a fun T-shirt about the star of the show, you certainly would take notice, right? You may not buy it, but you'll definitely tell your friends about it. That's what social media is about—be relatable.

Find connections, not customers:

Nobody likes being sold to. We want to be in control; we want to decide what we buy. Your social content certainly does influence your customers' decisions. But if you are talking more about YOU than how you can benefit THEM, you may not be doing it right.

Be experimental:

While having a strong content strategy is always a good practice, it's also important to leave room for experimenting with new forms of content. This will prevent your content from becoming monotonous and provide you with fresh insights into yo audience's preferences.

Navigating through the social space can be fun and full of opportunities if you are open to trying new things.
